Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh (born December 23, 1973), also known as Sheikh Omar, is a British-Pakistani terrorist convicted of kidnapping and murdering Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in 2002.
Sheikh had a privileged upbringing and was educated at the London School of Economics. He became involved in militant activities during the Bosnian War in the early 1990s.
Prior to the Daniel Pearl kidnapping, Sheikh was involved in the 1994 kidnappings of Western tourists in India. He was arrested in India and remained imprisoned until 1999.
He was released from an Indian prison in December 1999 as part of a deal to secure the release of passengers from Indian Airlines Flight 814, which had been hijacked and taken to Kandahar, Afghanistan.
Following the Daniel Pearl murder, Sheikh was arrested in Pakistan and convicted of the crime in 2002. He was sentenced to death.
In April 2020, a Pakistani court overturned Sheikh's conviction for Daniel Pearl's murder, downgrading his sentence to manslaughter and sentencing him to seven years in prison. However, he remained in custody pending appeals. The decision to overturn the conviction was met with international condemnation.
As of 2023, Sheikh remains in Pakistani custody, with ongoing legal battles surrounding his detention. The United States has repeatedly sought his extradition to face trial for his involvement in the kidnapping and murder of Daniel Pearl.
